MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed an order on recognition of Crimea as an independent sovereign state.

This comes after building tensions in Ukraine. U.S. & EU has slapped Russia with sanctions on Monday. Earlier Monday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said ‘what the Putin regime has done cannot be tolerated’.

Crimea’s parliament declared today that it is now an independent state

The sanctions imposed by U.S. & EU to Russia included assets frozen and travel bans.

Stephen Harper says Canada will announce more sanctions on Russia as a result of Sunday’s vote in Crimea to secede from Ukraine.

Harper is to fly to Kyiv on Friday to show his support for the temporary government in the face of Russian aggression in the strategic Black Sea region.
