Stuntmen and women don’t get enough credit. They usually sit in the background, waiting for their name to be called upon, most of the time twiddling their fingers before leaping through hoops of fire (or something like that). Walking Dead is a very popular show, which means there are going to be high demands for new episodes. Not only that, but they want the episodes to be top notch. Well, it looks like those of you seeking out your Walking Dead fix will have to wait a bit longer – but the reasoning behind the halt isn’t pointless. A stunt performer died recently after falling on-set during the filming of The Walking Dead – John Bernecker has been quoted as being a “large part of the show”. AMC gave an official quote on the matter, stating that:
“We are deeply saddened by this loss and our hearts and prayers are with John’s family, friends and colleagues during this extremely difficult time,”. The death itself was considered an accident, with blunt force trauma to the head being the official cause – this is all according to the Coweta County Coroner, Hank Richard. The incident is still under wraps, and more information surrounding this story has yet to be unraveled. SAG-AFTRA also made a statement regarding the incident, which is a union who represents media workers of this nature. Bernecker was called an “accomplished stuntman”, and they also referenced his death as being a “tragic and untimely loss”. They also made another statement, saying: “The safety of our members is paramount. We will work with the authorities and closely monitor their investigations into this tragic incident,”. The SAG-AFTRA had a lot to say, and it kind of seemed like they weren’t entirely done with the situation.
The LifeLink Foundation, which is a non-profit organ donation community of sorts, stated that Bernecker’s friends and family would “ensure his legacy will live on”. They continued to say that: “Not only through the personal and professional contributions he made during his life, but also by their generous decision to allow John to save lives as an organ donor.” – his family has requested privacy as of now, which is understandable. Many of the cast members from The Walking Dead made tribute posts on their social media pages, letting their following know just how much Bernecker meant to the entire “Walking Dead operation”. Bernecker has has his fingers in many pies, some of which would include the recent blockbuster hit “Logan”, as well as the recent rendition of the “Fantastic Four”. The eighth season of The Walking Dead is slated to being around late 2017, which means that the halt of production could call for an even later release (potentially in 2018?). Regardless, this is a tragic incident to have occurred, and the impact has definitely been a big one.
