FBI Issues a Warning to Parents Over “Connected Toys” July 19, 2017Leave a comment

2017 is a crazy year, all things considered. There are always technological advancements to look at, but how many of them are going to improve upon our lives? A lot of the time I feel as if there are things being released that are pretty much useless. Interactive toys, otherwise referred to as “Connected Toys”, are very popular – so much so, that it’s hard to find one that isn’t connected. These are toys that can be paired with smart devices, something like a smartphone or even a tablet. When you have toys that are linked with technology, it’s going to leave your kids a bit vulnerable. This past year, there have been a few problems with connected toys. Cloud Pets, which is a stuffed animal line of connected toys, has had some issues to take care of. Hackers managed to get their hands on personal information related to the people using these toys; they could be listening through the microphones and recordings that take place through these toys.

The FBI themselves have given warnings in regards to this problem, and that goes to show just how serious of an issue that it is. When the FBI is telling you that hackers are getting quite aggressive, especially focusing on items that pertain to your kids. You always want to keep your kids safe, and if that means avoiding smart toys, there’s nothing wrong with that. You’ve got to be incredibly smart with the kind of toys you introduce to your kids, because in 2017, you never really know what is around the next corner. Hackers and personal information theft have become a large part of society, and it’s up to us to make sure that we’re battling back. You need to do your due diligence before making the purchase, as understanding whether a toy is connected or not is going to make things way easier. The FBI made a statement in regards to these toys, and it goes something like this:

“The FBI encourages consumers to consider cyber security prior to introducing smart, interactive or internet-connected toys into their homes or trusted environments. Smart toys and entertainment devices for children are increasingly incorporating technologies that learn and tailor their behaviors based on user interactions,”.

You need to be alert at all times, because 2017 can be an unforgiving time to be alive. There will always be a new method to the madness, but it’s critical to understand that security will always be the main priority. Keep your software updated at all times, and try to make sure that you’re putting an effort into the safety of your kids. WiFi networks are always lackluster when it comes to security, but you can improve upon them in many different ways. A password will come in handy – trying to avoid toys with microphones is also an ideal thing to consider.
