Luxury fashion brands are creating their own Android Wear watches, this has become a trend to take virtually similar hardware and giving it their own luxurious touch. This has been done by Tag Heuer, Montblanc, Movado, Hugo Boss, Diesel, Emporio Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors — now another giant of fashion industry is also releasing their collection of Android Wear watches.
Louis Vuitton Tambour Horizon is the first smartwatch introduced from the famous designer company. Tambour Horizon is quite identical to the conventional Tambour watch. Only the physical hardware for a digital update to Google’s Android Wear 2.0 platform.
Louis Vuitton is also adding some custom watchfaces based on its already existing product lineup along with the default Android Wear features. These features include flight-tracking and city guide features.
This is interesting although not surprising that louis Vuitton is not marketing this as an Android Wear Watch. It is mentioned though that the Tambour Horizon is powered by Android Wear. Their promotional video is filled with drama and the preaching about the nature of time and its connection to your journey through life rather than the technical hardware and which applications it is able to run.
Louis Vuitton is presenting a few details on specifications. The Tambour Horizon has a 390 x 390 AMOLED touchscreen underneath a sapphire crystal. The watch itself has a 42mm stainless steel case.
Louis Vuitton hasn’t mentioned what processor is used in Tambour Horizon. The odds are that it’s using the same Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip that is being used in everyone else is using in their devices.
Although the hardware is same as every other Android wear watch available in the market the prices start at $2,450 for the stainless steel model and $2,900 for the black model. This high prices are due to the fact that it is being manufactured by Louis Vuitton despite having the identical features of every other Android Wear watch available in the market.
Tambour Horizon doesn’t have a heart rate monitor instead using the caseback for a sapphire crystal Louis Vuitton logo.
The similarly styled Louis Vuitton Escale Time Zone Mechanical watch costs about $7,200. It is arguable that the smartwatch version is a good bargain as compared to Escale Time Zone Mechanical watch.
The mechanical version is a modified model designed in house at LV thus making it far better and more attractive model for the given price.
The mass-produced movements in the luxury fashion industry for watches is not new though. There is a certain exception though – Louis Vuitton is a class apart from the so-called luxury mechanical watches from Armani and Hugo Boss just because they used cheaper Swiss Rhonda or Japanese Miyota movements. The sales are actually made on the basis of style only.
They are just the Android Wear watches we see today, just replace the quartz innards with a relatively modern Qualcomm chip and you have a designer Android Wear watch.
The Louis Vuitton Tambour Horizon will be available soon from Louis Vuitton.
