Facebook’s Al Chatbots are Shut Down After they Invented a new Language

AI is always viewed with suspicion.

When we were younger, it was imperative for us to have our own language, something that adults couldn’t understand. It seems like it’s not only children that want that since Facebook’s AI chatbots aspired to do the same.

Researchers working on the project recently discovered two of Facebook’s chatbots named Alice and Bob communicating with each other in a language generated with random selection of words, carrying out a conversation that is beyond human comprehension.

Here’s a look into the said conversation;

Bob: i can i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me

Bob: i i can i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me

Bob: i . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i i i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have 0 to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

When you look at it, it just seems some gibberish created as a fault in the system but researchers say it is kind of a shorthand. A visiting researcher at Facebook’s Artificial Intelligence Research Division  (FAIR), Dhruv Batra said;

“Agents will drift off understandable language and invent code words for themselves. Like if I say ‘the’ five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item. This isn’t so different from the way communities of humans create shorthands.”

Facebook had recently announced an initiative for developing AI bots that had the programming to negotiate at FAIR. But some of the AI bots had appeared to develop the ability to lie, creating a language of their own being the newest notch in their belt.
